Strong Earthquake Jolts San Francisco Bay Area in Early Morning Hours

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay Area early Thursday morning, startling residents awake and triggering emergency alerts across the region.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake occurred shortly before 1:45 a.m. and was centered near Boulder Creek, an unincorporated community in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The tremor was widely felt across surrounding cities, with many residents reporting sudden shaking and phone notifications.

The early warning came through the ShakeAlert system, which sent alerts moments before the shaking intensified. Initially estimated at magnitude 5.0, the quake was later revised slightly downward to 4.9.

As of now, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or significant structural damage. However, local authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess any potential impacts.

Earthquakes of this magnitude are considered moderate and can cause noticeable shaking, especially in areas close to the epicenter. Residents are encouraged to remain alert for aftershocks and review earthquake preparedness plans.

This latest seismic event serves as a reminder of the Bay Area’s location along active fault lines, where earthquakes remain an ongoing natural hazard.
