Florida Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen Shot Dead, Husband Arrested
CORAL SPRINGS, FL — Tragedy struck Coral Springs on Wednesday as Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen, 38, was shot and killed in her home. Authorities have arrested her husband, Stephen Bowen, 40, as the sole suspect in what police are calling a domestic violence incident.
Metayer Bowen made history as the first Black woman and first Haitian American woman to serve on the Coral Springs Commission. She was first elected in 2020, re-elected in 2024, and appointed vice mayor by her peers. Beyond local politics, she served as Caribbean vote director for Kamala Harris’ 2024 presidential campaign, highlighting her influence and leadership in Florida politics.
Police discovered her body after responding to a 911 call. Stephen Bowen, who is the chief operating officer of the nonprofit Men of St. Luke, was booked into Broward County Jail in Fort Lauderdale. Details on his legal representation are not yet available.
Fellow Commissioner Joshua Simmons described Metayer Bowen as a “battle buddy” with a genuinely caring heart, noting her dedication to public service despite political challenges.
The Coral Springs community mourns the loss of a pioneering leader whose impact extended beyond local government, leaving a lasting legacy of service and advocacy.
